We Love Yellowtail Sushi!

My older sister and I eat takeout sushi about once a week when it’s discounted in the evening.

We both love yellowtail sushi.

However, yellowtail becomes expensive during the year-end and New Year holidays because it’s often used in traditional New Year’s dishes.

We were craving yellowtail sushi in mid-December, but it wasn’t available at the sushi counter.

Yesterday, my older sister bought it for the first time in a long while.

It seems that the price has finally returned to normal.

Last Sunday, I baked two kinds of cookies.

At first, I was planning to bake just one kind to use up some cocoa powder.

Even though it was my first time making those cookies and I used a recipe I asked an AI for, they turned out really delicious.

That put me in a good mood, so I felt like baking another kind of cookies.

I made cocoa cookie dough again, and in addition, I made plain cookie dough.

Then I combined them to make checkered cookies.

They turned out beautifully and were very delicious.

Today, I gave them to a friend who had given me Chitose candy as a gift.

I was very happy that my friend liked the cookies too.

In Japan, people say 「Yoi otoshi wo」 at the end of the year.

I guess it could be translated into English, and I used to think that Americans might actually use that kind of greeting.

But do they say greetings like the Japanese New Year’s phrase 「Kotoshi mo Yoroshiku」?

I thought that Americans don’t say anything like that. Instead, they might say greetings like 「Hello」 or 「Hi」 first, and then ask something like 「How have you been?」 and continue the conversation as usual.

According to ChatGPT, that perception is almost right.

We Japanese hope for good relationships with others at the beginning of the year through New Year’s greetings. On the other hand, Americans tend to take it for granted that relationships with others will continue even as the years pass.

We can translate Japanese greetings into English, but it is not unnatural or rude for us not to do so.

Nanakusa Udon

Yesterday, my older sister and I went shopping and noticed that Nanakusa Gayu toppings were being sold at the supermarket.

Nanakusa Gayu is a traditional dish eaten in Japan on January 7th.

“Nanakusa” means “seven herbs” (seven kinds of vegetables), and “gayu” (or kayu) means rice porridge.

Nanakusa Gayu is eaten to give the stomach a rest after rich New Year’s meals.

However, we didn’t buy the toppings because we eat our own original version of Nanakusa Gayu or udon every year.

This morning, my older sister cooked Nanakusa soup.
